LouAnn Howard is the Director of Education for the Mid-America Union. She spent 13 years as a classroom teacher in Colorado, Kansas, and Illinois before joining the Illinois Conference as an Associate Superintendent of Schools. After 2 years, she became the Superintendent in Illinois for 7 years before moving to Lincoln NE to become the Associate Director of the Mid-America Union. She enjoys baseball, especially the Cubs, and family, especially spending time with her five great-nephews and nieces.
athways 2.0: A Journey to Excellence Through Literacy! provides instruction in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. This biblically-based curriculum is built on the Adventist worldview and the belief that Christ is the model teacher. Pathways 2.0 recognizes the responsibility of nurturing excellence and service to others. The lessons found in each unit provide rigorous academic quality aligned with standards of proficiency in literacy.
The new Daily Lesson Guides include the following features:
- Biblical-based essential question and big idea as the theme focus
- Specific standards taught within the unit
- Chart of suggested assessments
- Grade-level specific word study (including phonemic awareness and phonics in grades 1-2), vocabulary, and spelling lessons

Reading Workshop
- Whole group instruction based on daily shared reading and comprehension mini-lessons using anchor and paired texts
- Small group guided and independent reading

Writing Workshop
- Daily mini-lessons for writing and grammar, guided and independent writing
- Handwriting
Each week has 5 days of lessons centered in three instructional blocks:
- Word Study: Phonics, Phonemic Awareness, Vocabulary, and Spelling
- Reading Workshop: Whole-group (Comprehension and daily shared reading) and Small group (guided and independent reading)
- Writing Workshop: Writing and grammar mini-lessons (alternate days), guided and independent writing, and handwriting.
