ake City Academy, in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, utilizes an innovative educational approach that emphasizes STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math)-based learning. We view STEAM as an integrated approach to learning which requires an intentional connection among standards, assessments, and lesson design/implementation. Utilizing and leveraging the integrity of the arts themselves is essential to an authentic STEAM initiative. The foundations for this program are curiosity, critical thinking, and process-based learning. Students take calculated risks, participate in experience-based learning, become aggressive problem solvers, work well with others, and effectively navigate the creative process. STEAM projects empower students to become the innovators, educators, leaders, and pupils of the 21st century.

In the fall of 2016 our goal was for a one to one laptop program for 3rd-10th grade, and an iPad cart to be shared in 1st and 2nd grade. It was an audacious goal, but this would allow us to prepare our 1990’s style computer lab for modernization. After an inspiring and successful fundraising Gala our community stepped up in a big way. Combined with a $10,000 Versacare gift, LCA created a designated “Makerspace.” This high-tech workshop is a collaborative workspace inside the school for making, learning, exploring, and sharing. It is equipped with tools and materials for projects such as 3D printing, woodworking, electronics, coding, robotics, and 3D modeling  This space gives STEAM students the opportunity to learn in a hands-on environment while developing critical thinking skills and even boosting self-confidence.

While no one exactly knows what opportunities future advancements will bring, LCA is doing its best to make sure our students are prepared. Our primary focus at LCA will always be for our kids to center their lives in Christ. Classical academic attributes, reading, writing, and arithmetic will serve our students well. In addition, we embrace these new methods to help our students discover their God-given talents. Our prayer is that they spark a love for learning and use their future careers to honor Him. We must equip today’s students with tomorrow’s technology so that we can effectively further God’s Kingdom.
