New Science of Reading Phonics Adoptions for NAD Schools
any teachers in the field have asked us for recommendations for programs based on the Science of Reading (SOR). The Reading Center defines the SOR as, referring “to the growing body of scientific research that describes how the human brain learns to read, the skills kids need to develop to become proficient readers, and the appropriate methods to use to teach those skills effectively.”

NAD Summer Curriculum Committee included a group tasked with providing a recommendation for a program based on the SOR. The team had a presentation of SOR and evaluated five programs. The two programs, recommended by the committee and referenced below, were voted at the December 2024 Advisory and will be available for schools to adopt for the 2025/26 school year.
University of Florida Literacy Institute (UFLI) Foundations is “an explicit and systematic program that teaches students the foundational skills necessary for proficient reading. It follows a carefully developed scope and sequence designed to ensure that students systematically acquire each skill needed and learn to apply each skill with automaticity and confidence. The program is designed to be used for core instruction in the primary grades or for intervention with struggling students in any grade” (Retrieved from: https://ufli.education.ufl.edu/foundations/).
The UFLI Foundations program was developed by researchers at the University of Florida. They provide a handbook for the program and free downloadable/printable resources for schools. The NAD Elementary Textbook Order page will soon host a comprehensive one-page document where schools can order the handbook, attend the training via ALC, access the printable documents, take Science of Reading training, and watch helpful How to Use UFLI videos. Schools will also be able to order the downloadable materials from AdventSource via the link on the order page. It will be your one stop location for UFLI resources.
