dventist education is focused on creating a culture of excellence in schools. Excellence begins with high standards which assure quality curriculum, instruction, and assessment practices. Standards are statements of what learners are expected to know and be able to do at different stages of their education. The general goal of standards-based learning (alternately referred to as proficiency- or competency-based learning) is to ensure that students master the knowledge and skills that will lead to success in school, careers, and life.
Ellen White repeatedly called for high standards in Adventist schools, within the larger context of spiritual, physical, intellectual, and social-emotional development. Standards in NAD Seventh-day Adventist schools make visible the Adventist worldview across the early childhood-grade 12 curricula as well as the integration of national and provincial/state standards. NAD STANDARDS
NAD is giving deeper study to standards-based learning, particularly its relationship to the curriculum design process and the alignment of grading/reporting practices. Future topics will explore essential questions and big ideas, unit and lesson planning, unpacking of standards, standards-based grading and reporting, alignment of assessments to standards, and use of data by schools.
