AI in the Classroom

Generative AI has shown up everywhere and it can be quite overwhelming, so where should you start? We hope that these resources will help you get a better understanding of what Generative AI is, how you can help your students understand it and how you can use it too.

Generative AI For Your Students

MagicSchool has a large collection of AI tools for teachers but I think their most compelling feature is a tool that allows you to “Launch to Students” the AI tools that you would like them to use and then monitor and control them.

Brisk AI is a Google Chrome extension that can create resources for teachers using websites or videos that they find useful in their teaching. One of the tools that Brisk AI has is the Boost Student Activity tool. When used, teachers are able to create an activity where students can engage with a chatbot regarding the content they want students to better understand. Teachers are able to track the conversation between the student and the AI and AI will prompt the teacher if the conversation of the student is going off track.

NotebookLM allows you to upload your own source materials, such as PDFs of your curriculum, and then use those materials to create new assignments, activities, assessments, ask questions about the materials and so much more.

Diffit helps teachers create materials using existing resources or by simply typing about "literally anything." It generates summaries, readings, vocabularies, multiple-choice questions, short-answer questions, and open-ended questions. My favorite feature is the ability to create activities that help students summarize their learning, understand vocabulary, and improve reading and writing strategies. It also supports text analysis, collaboration, and critical thinking.

Teaching your students about AI

Code.org has great free curriculums that will help you teach your students about how AI works and how they can use it. I believe that it is important to give your students a foundation of how AI works to demystify what it is and guide them to its proper use.

They have curriculums about AI for students grades 2-12 that can be as short as one class period: Code.org Artificial Intelligence.

Take a look at the Foundations of Generative AI course to give your students a solid foundation on generative AI: Code.org Foundations of Generative AI.

Professional Development Resources

The Adventist Learning Community offers a free course on generative AI called Empowering Education with AI: Text and Image Generation Tools in the Classroom that will give you a great foundation. They also have a recorded webinar Generative AI in the Classroom on ALC.

The EdTech Unpacked podcast has released two episodes that delve into Generative AI further and will be releasing more on a regular basis.
